A tablet from Kish (in present-day Iraq) from about 700 bce provides evidence of the use of three hooks to indicate missing digits within a number. Between the 6th and 3rd centuries bce, the Babylonians employed symbols—typically one or two wedges—to mark empty positions between nonzero digits in their number system. Zero is both a number and a concept denoting the absence of quantity. It is represented by the symbol “0” and plays a foundational role in arithmetic, algebra, computing, and scientific measurement. Positional notation without the use of zero (using an empty space in tabular arrangements, or the word kha "emptiness") is known to have been in use in India from the sixth century. The earliest certain use of zero as a decimal positional digit dates to the ninth century.
